Lumbo sacral spine disease is in the lumbar spine or lower back also refers to a disorder in which a compromised disc causes low back pain. The disease causes degeneration of the lumbosacral junction and / or compression of the associated nerves.

The lumbar spine is mobile in nature while the sacrum is fixed, henceforth the Lumbo Sacral joint is a moving zone. In case of lumbosacral disease ample stress is laid on Lumbo Sacral joint and the LS intervertibral disc. This stress and pressure at the LS joint leads to conditions like sciatica and other nerve related disease.

Causes

Inflammation
As the proteins in the disc plate irritates the encompassing nerves - both the little nerve within the disc and the bigger nerves that go to the legs

Abnormal micro-motion instability
When the external rings of the plate called the annulus fibrosus, are worn down and cannot absorb stress on the spine effectively, resulting in movement along the vertebral segment.

Management/ Treatment

1. Non surgical treatment

Some of the non surgical treatment suggested for lumbo sacral spine disease is as follows

  • Exercising.
  • Anti-inflammatory medications
  • Physical therapy
  • Shockwave therapy
  • Hydrotherapy

2. Decompressive surgery (laminectomy)
3. Lumbosacral Distraction Stabilisation Surgery
